General Communiqué Final

Friends and comrades of the Civil War reenacting community:

It has been my privilege and pleasure to participate in this great endeavor we call a "hobby for over twenty-five years. Together, gentlemen, we have not only re-created historical events, but we have made history ourselves. The events of these years have been often epic in their scope, sometimes difficult in their execution, but always memorable.

When I first began in this hobby (by the way, as a private in a federal company), I never dreamed that some day I would be allowed to portray a general. It is truly a humbling notion that men might allow me to lead them when they are under no obligation to do so. None of us "deserves that it is an honor bestowed upon us by the newest private in the ranks. For all of this, I am truly grateful.

Two years ago, as I underwent heart bypass surgery, it was the prayers and the letters of encouragement from many of you that truly made the difference. For this, too, I am very grateful.

At Prairie Grove, Arkansas, it was my privilege to command the confederate troops at that event. Prairie Grove has been the place where many important events have taken place. The Fourth (Extra) Battalion was officially formed and took the field for the first time there. The Trans Mississippi Brigade first unfurled its flag there. So, it was fitting that, at Prairie Grove, I announced my retirement from the reenacting hobby and from command of the Trans Mississippi Brigade.

This decision has been difficult in the extreme for me to make. The hobby has been such an important part of my life for so long. However, health issues have arisen for me that have made it impossible for me to continue to engage in such a physically demanding activity. So, the time has come for me to bid the hobby a fond farewell.

I do this with a mixture of sadness and joy. I am saddened to know that there are many of you whom I may never see again. But, I am joyful to know that God now has other things for me to do. Together, we have accomplished so much. I leave you with the challenge to continue this great hobby and build on the foundation that has been laid by so many who have gone before.

Thank you all and farewell.

I remain your most humble and obedient servant,

Brig. Gen. J. Beck Trans Mississippi Brigade
